Many people feel low in mood from time to time. This can look different for everyone, but noticing common signs can help you understand how you’re feeling and what can help to feel more like yourself again.
The PHQ-9 is a short questionnaire that helps you check in with your mood and see whether you may have noticed some common signs of depression.
It’s a simple way to pause and reflect on how you’ve been feeling lately – a bit like taking your emotional temperature.
Kroenke K, Spitzer RL, Williams JB. The PHQ-9: validity of a brief depression severity measure. Journal of General Internal Medicine. 2001;16(9):606-613. This is the original validation study for the PHQ-9. The authors demonstrated that the PHQ-9 has excellent reliability, validity, sensitivity, and specificity as a diagnostic measure for depressive disorders. They established the standard cut-off scores and severity ranges that are widely used in clinical practice today.
