Clinical Psychologist & CBT Therapist, BABCP
“Offload is a fantastic resource for both clients and therapists. The world of CBT has been lacking an app which enables the sharing of CBT worksheets and homework tasks between clients and therapists, but Offload completely does this, making the service we offer more professional and the benefits to clients greater.”
Frequently asked questions
What does ABC stand for in CBT?
A is the activating event, the situation that sets things off. B is your belief or interpretation of that event. C is the consequence: how you feel and what you do as a result. The model shows that it is usually B, not A, that drives how we feel, which is why changing interpretations can change emotions.
Why is the ABC model useful?
It gives you a simple structure for slowing down and understanding your reactions. Two people can face the same event and feel completely differently because their beliefs about it differ. Once you can separate the event from your interpretation, you can start questioning interpretations that are unhelpful or inaccurate.
How long is this video?
It is a short animated explainer that takes just a few minutes to watch. It pairs well with Offload's interactive tools, such as the Thought Record, where you can apply the ABC model to your own situations.
Is the ABC model evidence-based?
Yes. The ABC model comes from the foundations of cognitive behavioural therapy and remains one of the first frameworks therapists teach. CBT itself is among the most researched forms of psychotherapy and is recommended by NICE for a wide range of difficulties.
